Effect of shear velocity and flow regimes on scallop post-larval detachment feed on two different diets ArchiMer
Gagne, Renee; Tremblay, Rejean; Olivier, Frederic; Pernet, Fabrice; Miner, Philippe; Samain, Jean-francois.
Through biological flume experiments, we studied the effect of shear velocity and attachment period on the percent detachment of Pecten maximus post-larvae of different sizes reared on two experimental diets. The first diet, (Pavlova lutheri, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans), which served as a reference diet (PTC), is commonly used in bivalve hatcheries; the second is the PTC diet with the addition of Rhodomonas salina (PTCR). Our results indicate that the detachment of post-larvae fed PTCR diet showed significant interactions between scallop length, attachment period and shear stress, while the post-larvae feed with the PTC diet showed only effect of shear stress factor. Furthermore, post-larvae exposed to various flume velocities showed...

Making water flow: a comparison of the hydrodynamic characteristics of 12 different benthic biological flumes ArchiMer
Jonsson, Per R.; Van Duren, Luca A.; Amielh, Muriel; Asmus, Ragnhild; Aspden, Rebecca J.; Daunys, Darius; Friedrichs, Michael; Friend, Patrick L.; Olivier, Frédéric; Pope, Nick; Precht, Elimar; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Schaaff, Estelle.
Flume tanks are becoming increasingly important research tools in aquatic ecology, to link biological to hydrodynamical processes. There is no such thing as a "standard flume tank", and no flume tank is suitable for every type of research question. A series of experiments has been carried out to characterise and compare the hydrodynamic characteristics of 12 different flume tanks that are designed specifically for biological research. These facilities are part of the EU network BioFlow. The flumes could be divided into four basic design types: straight, racetrack, annular and field flumes. In each facility, two vertical velocity profiles were measured: one at 0.05 m s(-1) and one at 0.25 m s(-1). In those flumes equipped with Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters...

Observed and predicted vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles and bedforms in oscillatory-only flow OMA
Williams, J.J.; Bell, P.S.; Thorne, P.D.; Trouw, K.; Hardcastle, P.J.; Humphrey, J.D..
Measurements of hydrodynamic conditions and vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, have been obtained above rippled sandy beds in a large wave flume. Measured values of wave height and period, water depth and sediment properties are used in well-known formulae to predict sediment dynamics and bed shear stresses due to waves. These data are then used in an existing convective model and a new model to predict C-profiles. Measured C-profiles and C-profiles predicted by the new model are shown to agree well for a range of grain sizes and wave conditions. Grain-scale bed roughness, defined using data from the model, is found to vary with the wave mobility number. Values for the wave mixing coefficient derived using the new model are...
